This is Freedom Rock,

It is a boulder that was pulled from a rock quarry and just sat there by the road and teenagers found entertainment by painting some vulgar graffiti on it and then one day a guy named Bubba Sorenson took some time to paint a Military tribute on it, that was ten years ago and he has a new painting on it by every Memorial day.

There are several bike runs to the Rock and people constantly visit it. There is a picnic table and a small shed by the rock that has pictures of all the paintings Bubba has done on the rock along with a donations box and a note book so visitors can leave a note for Bubba. There is also a telephone pole that has become a monument of its own with 'In Memory' patches stabled to it and even a cross attached to it.

The donations are slowly paying for paint, the picnic table, the shed, and next year they hope to have lighting for the rock at night.

One year when he was painting one of the pictures two bikers pulled over, they happened to be Veitnam Vets on a mission to spread the ashes of some passed comrades across America and asked if they can put some of the ashes at the base of the rock. Bubba told him that in Iowa the wind never stops and they would just blow away so he suggested putting the ashes in the paint and so today there are over 17 United State Veterans painted into the green paint used on the rock.
